Gifted and Talented

Gifted and talented students are those who are identified in grades 2-5 as demonstrating high performance ability or potential in academic areas and therefore require an educational program beyond that normally provided by the general school program in order to achieve their potential. Identification is a multi-step process, which consists of screening and referral, assessment of eligibility, and placement. Our school continuously screens all students by reviewing census aptitude and achievement test scores. Referrals from administrators, parents, teachers, and students will also be accepted. Initial screening does not in itself guarantee placement.

The state of South Carolina has established three dimensions of giftedness as criteria for placement in the academically gifted program. In order to qualify for placement in the gifted program, a student must meet the eligibility criteria in two out of the following three dimensions.

Dimension A: Reasoning Abilities

Students must demonstrate high aptitude (93rd national age percentile or above) in one or more of three areas: verbal/linguistic, quantitative/mathematical, nonverbal, and/or a composite of all three. (CogAT/OLSAT)

Dimension B: High Achievement in Reading and or Mathematical Areas

Students must demonstrate high achievement (94th national percentile and above) in reading and/or mathematical areas as measured by nationally normed or South Carolina statewide assessment instruments. (MAP/PASS)

Dimension C: Intellectual/Academic Performance

Students must demonstrate a high degree of interest in and commitment to academic and/or intellectual pursuits. Students must also achieve a qualifying score through the performance task STAR.
